The DME first needs to be placed into a state that allows supported tuning software to read and/or write calibration data.

The unlock provides access.
The tuning software uses that access.

Why Does My BMW or Toyota Supra Need a DME Unlock?

An unlock simply gives compatible tuning software the access it requires to program the DME.

The tune, not the unlock itself, is what produces additional performance.

How Is a Pre-June 2020 DME Unlock Performed?
For a compatible pre-06/2020 DME, the procedure can generally be completed right here at Tuning Dynamics.
This is commonly referred to as a bench unlock.
Step 1: The DME Is Removed From the Vehicle
The engine computer is carefully accessed and removed using the appropriate procedures for the vehicle.
Because the DME is an expensive and critical electronic component, proper handling is extremely important.
The vehicle's electrical system, connectors and DME must all be treated correctly during removal and installation.
Step 2: The DME Is Connected to Professional Bench Equipment
Once removed, the DME is taken to our programming bench.
Tuning Dynamics uses professional ECU programming equipment, including systems such as AutoTuner and bFlash depending on the application and required procedure.
Rather than attempting to program the unit through the vehicle's normal OBD connection, the DME is connected directly to the programming interface using the appropriate DME harness and factory-style connections.

Step 3: Communication With the DME Is Established
The programming equipment communicates directly with the engine computer.

What Is a FEMTO DME Unlock?
A FEMTO unlock is the solution used for many of the newer-generation BMW Bosch DMEs that cannot be unlocked using the conventional local bench procedure.
Beginning around June 2020, BMW introduced additional security measures into these engine computers.
As a result, the unlocking strategy changed substantially.
Rather than simply placing the newer DME on a local programming bench and performing the same procedure used for earlier computers, the DME must go through the specialized FEMTO unlocking process.
This is why a newer BMW or Supra cannot necessarily receive a same-day bench unlock even though an older version of essentially the same vehicle can.
The difference is inside the DME.
How Does the FEMTO Unlock Process Work?
The FEMTO process involves several steps.
Step 1: Determine That FEMTO Is Required (this applies to both BMW DME Unlock & Toyota B58)
Before anything is shipped, the DME application should be identified to make sure the correct unlocking process is being used.
Generally, the newer post-06/2020 generation requires FEMTO.

Step 2: Remove the DME
The engine computer must be removed from the vehicle.
For customers bringing their vehicle to Tuning Dynamics, we can handle the removal and reinstallation process.

Step 3: Securely Ship the DME for FEMTO Service
Once removed, the DME is carefully packaged and transported for the specialized unlock procedure.
Protecting the module during shipping is extremely important.
A BMW DME is not a component that should simply be tossed into a shipping box with minimal protection.
