A Step By Step Guide To Unlocking Your BMW & Toyota Supra DME

Step-by-step: Unlock your BMW DME for OBD flashing

1) Confirm you actually need a bench unlock

  1. Check the DME production date, not the car’s build date. This process applies to ECUs dated June 2020 or earlier.

  2. Verify your tuning app’s current support status (MHD, bootmod3, MG Flasher, or EcuTek). If the car recently got a dealer/OTA software update, OBD flashing may be blocked—requiring a bench unlock first.

2) Pick your tuning platform

  • Supported after unlock: MHD, Bootmod3, MG Flasher, EcuTek (EcuTek can cost extra compared to others).

3) Prevent re-locks

  • Turn off OTA updates in iDrive to avoid surprise re-locks from over-the-air updates after you unlock/flash. (Some MG1/MD1 ECUs have received OTA updates that relock tuning.)

4) Choose how to get the unlock done

Option A — In-person (Port Richey, FL):

  • Call Tuning Dynamics to schedule. They remove the DME, perform the bench unlock, and you leave same day with OBD read/write enabled for your chosen tune. Pricing: $300 (any payment method). Availability: Mon–Sat during business hours.

Option B — Mail-in (anywhere):

  • You remove the DME and ship it to Tuning Dynamics. They bench-unlock it and same-day ship it back. Pricing: $200 (includes standard return shipping) or $250 (includes next-day return shipping). You pay shipping to them; their price includes insured return shipping. Pack well—they aren’t liable for DOA/damaged units in transit.

After a dealer or OTA software update, a DME may be relocked and could require another paid unlock. Pricing above includes one bench unlock service.

5) If you’re mailing the DME, prep and ship it

  1. Remove the DME (Tuning Dynamics removes it for you if you go in-person).

  2. Package it securely and insure the shipment; you’re responsible for getting it to them intact.

(Best practices: disconnect the negative battery terminal, label connectors, protect pins/seals, avoid static discharge.)

6) After the bench unlock

  • Reinstall the DME (or Tuning Dynamics reinstalls it if you were in-person).

  • Your DME will now allow read/write via the OBD diagnostic port, so you can use your selected tuning app normally.

7) Flash your tune over OBD (MHD / BM3 / MG Flasher / EcuTek)

  1. Connect a stable battery charger to the car.

  2. Plug in your recommended OBD interface for your app.

  3. In the app, check support, purchase/activate license, and read/backup the current software if the app offers it.

  4. Write the desired map (follow the app’s on-screen prompts).

  5. After flashing, clear faults (if any) and test drive gently to confirm everything is happy.

8) Keep it unlocked

  • Leave OTA updates disabled to reduce relock risk. If a dealer updates your software later, you may need to repeat the bench unlock service.
